The Canadian Institute of Actuaries has formed a Project Oversight Group to oversee research on Canadian pensioner mortality. Ad Res has been retained as researcher for this project. The data collection phase has begun as of April 2023.

The research objective is to update the CPM2014 tables currently in use by the Canadian pensions industry in the valuation of Canadian pension and retiree medical plans. A secondary goal is to establish a robust framework for regularly updating the CPM tables. This framework includes both a detailed set of data cleaning and validation rules, as well as a comparative analysis of different mortality table graduation methods to identify the most suitable method given the data.

Ad Res is an actuarial consulting firm based in Cologne, Germany, which specialises in mortality- and longevity-related research. Engaged by clients from Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, Ad Res applies actuarial best-practices in the fields of quantitative risk modelling and mortality forecasting across the fields of insurance and reinsurance, pensions, and retirement planning.

Ad Res collaborates with Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Koblenz) in actuarial science research projects, including an ongoing CIA research project on Canadian mortality improvements. Ad Res also collaborates with data analytics firm inducto GmbH in data management for mortality investigations. Past clients of our collaboration include German and UK pension plans as well as life insurers, reinsurers and pension consulting firms in various countries.

The role of the CIA in this project, and by extension the research team led by Kai Kaufhold, is to provide a means of aggregating the data contributed by pension plans and consulting firms on their behalf on an independent platform and to deliver impartial research results which will allow for an objective and rigorous derivation of the new CPM tables.

The memos contained in the files below are addressed to data providers for the Canadian Pensioners’ Mortality Update Project, namely, Canadian pension plans or pension consultants/administrators providing data on their behalf, or any Canadian life insurance companies providing group annuitant experience data.
